This error can appear at random—usually when Chrome (or a program or extension accessing Chrome) has tried to do something it shouldn’t. A more advanced explanation is that Chrome, in this instance, has tried to operate outside of protected memory without approval. A bug in Chrome might cause it to fail to render a page properly, for instance, which might cause this problem. It isn’t an error that’s too complicated to fix, however. If it doesn’t fix itself, you can try and fix a Status_Access_Violation error in Chrome using the steps below.
How to Fix Status_Access_Violation in Chrome
If you’re experiencing this error while using Chrome, one of the more straightforward solutions is to refresh the page multiple times. Easy enough—simply press the Refresh button on the toolbar a few times and see if the error goes away and your page renders properly.
If that doesn’t work, the next troubleshooting step is to manually update Chrome to ensure you have the adequately updated version. Updating the browser can provide the browser’s bug fixes to help eliminate the error.
Change Chrome’s File Name
If you’re still having issues with Chrome and experiencing the error, you can try to change the Chrome executable name. This is only advisable for a short period to see if Chrome tries to verify its own file integrity. To change Chrome’s file name:
Close Chrome and open File Explorer by clicking the icon on the taskbar. Alternatively, use the keyboard shortcut Windows key + E.When File Explorer opens, copy and paste the following path into the address bar at the top and press Enter:C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\ApplicationFind the chrome.exe file, right-click it, and select Rename from the context menu.Give the file a name other than Chrome. For example, we’re renaming it to Google_Chrome.exe, but you can use whatever you want. However, ensure you don’t change the .exe file extension.If you don’t see file extensions, click the View tab in File Explorer and check the File name extensions box.Launch Google Chrome, and the error should no longer appear.
This is a bit of a workaround, but you may find that, by renaming Chrome, you encounter problems later. If you do, consider reinstalling Chrome instead—we’ve outlined how below.
Reinstall Chrome
Another straightforward way to fix Status_Acess_Violation in Chrome is to reinstall the browser. To reinstall Google Chrome:
The first thing you’ll need to do is uninstall Chrome. If you’re on Windows 11, there are several ways to uninstall an app.On Windows 10 or 11, you can hit the keyboard shortcut Windows key + R to launch the Run dialog.Type appwiz.cpl in the Run line and click OK or hit Enter.Find Google Chrome on the list of apps. Right-click it and click the Uninstall button. Once you complete the process of installing Chrome, start your browsing, and the error should no longer appear.
Disable Chrome Extensions
All extensions for Chrome are not created equal. However, some can be of poor quality and may result in the Status_Access_Violation error in Chrome. To narrow down the problematic extension, you’ll need to disable some. To disable Chrome extensions, use these steps:
